about

During a roadtrip to Poland, composer Werner Urban and his long-time girlfriend photographer Lilian van Rooij discover an abandoned freight station just outside Wrocław's city center. Tracks and warehouses, covered and filled with rusty material, are all part of ‘Dworzec Towarowy’, the popular name used by locals to describe the scene. Urban decides to ‘record the location’ and use sounds he extracts from the place to compose music with.

By collecting sounds that are almost extinct, Werner Urban not only archives time, he recycles place and object. A certain machine, once a proud producer for the masses, reincarnates to play a role it was never cut out for. Listen to a big blow of a falling brickstone, the scratching of broken glass on a train track or an old tire, slowly rolling through a puddle before it tips over and causes a big splash. Werner Urban preserves the scenery with sound in a way a photographer produces images or an author turns words into novelles. On the spot, he creates protagonists out of a rusty nail or a broken fluorescent tube, while reinstating their functionality beyond the present time.
